Foot Rests

Why a pouffe belongs in every home

After a long day, there’s nothing better than stretching out on the sofa, taking a deep breath, and letting your home do what it’s meant to do: help you relax. A pouffe is one of those simple furniture choices that instantly add comfort to everyday living. It gives you a spot to rest your feet, supports a more laid-back routine, and brings a stylish finishing touch to your interior.

Pouffes, also known as footrests or footstools, are a smart way to create a more flexible home. Need a soft footrest in front of your favourite chair? Looking for extra seating when guests arrive? Want a cosy accent that adds texture, colour, and personality to the room? A well-chosen pouffe can do all of that, without taking up too much space.

From modern minimal designs to statement options in bold colours or soft fabrics like velvet, pouffes make it easy to refresh your home with a small change that feels surprisingly impactful.

At vidaXL, pouffes come in many forms — especially as practical footstools and footrests designed for comfort and everyday use. The collection includes a wide variety of sizes, making it easy to find a compact option for smaller spaces or a larger piece that can sit proudly next to a sofa setup.

Because different homes call for different looks, vidaXL offers footstools in multiple designs and materials. You can choose from upholstered styles for a soft, cosy feel, or go for finishes that look more structured and modern. Materials like velvet can add warmth and texture.

Whether you prefer a neutral tone or want to bring in a pop of colour, there’s a wide mix of styles to explore — so you can choose a pouffe that fits perfectly into your living room, bedroom, or hallway without overcomplicating your layout.

What is a pouffe?

A pouffe is best described as a soft, low piece of furniture designed to support comfort, flexibility, and style. Many people use pouffes as footstools, but they can also act as extra seating, a casual place to perch, or even a decorative accent in a room.

Compared with a more structured footrest, a pouffe often has a softer silhouette and more cushioned construction. It’s typically lightweight too, which makes it easy to move around — perfect for re-arranging, putting it next to a chair, or pulling it closer to the sofa when you want to fully relax.

Footstools and pouffes are sometimes mixed up with ottomans, but the biggest difference is usually in shape and build. Pouffes tend to have a lower profile, softer edges, and a more relaxed feel — and that’s exactly what makes them such a popular choice in modern homes.

Where to use a pouffe: room-by-room ideas

Pouffes are incredibly easy to style because they work in so many different spaces. Here are a few popular ways to use them throughout your home.

• Living room: In the living room, a pouffe can sit right beside the sofa or in front of it to act as a comfortable footrest. If you love curling up with a blanket, it’s a great way to add comfort while keeping the layout relaxed and inviting. You can also use it to balance a seating arrangement, especially if you want to soften the lines of larger furniture pieces.

• Bedroom: In the bedroom, pouffes can be used near the bed as a low seat, making it easier to get ready in the morning or unwind at night. They’re also great if you want a practical place to rest a robe or lay out tomorrow’s outfit.

• Hallway: A pouffe in the hallway gives you a simple place to sit while taking off your shoes. It’s a small upgrade that makes everyday routines smoother, especially in busy households.

• Reading corners and cosy spaces: If you have a reading nook, putting a pouffe nearby makes it instantly more comfortable. Add a small side table for a drink and keep magazines close by — and you’ve created a corner that feels both functional and restful.

Pouffes give you comfort and everyday benefits

A pouffe may look like a small detail, but it can make a big difference to your comfort at home. Using one as a comfortable footrest helps you unwind more easily, especially after a long day spent on your feet.

By lifting your legs and giving your feet proper support, a footstool can add comfort to your downtime — whether you’re watching a film on the sofa, reading, or simply taking a quiet moment to relax.

Pouffes are also a great solution when you need flexible seating. Instead of pulling out a dining chair, you can bring in a soft pouffe and instantly provide a casual spot for someone to perch. In many homes, that kind of flexibility is priceless — because comfort isn’t just about how furniture looks, but about how it supports real life.

Choosing the right pouffe: size, height and shape

Choosing the right pouffe is all about getting the size, height, and shape that suits your home. Start by thinking about where you’ll use it most.

If your pouffe is mainly for the sofa, you’ll want a height that feels natural when resting your feet. A low profile works well for most seating, keeping your posture relaxed while still looking proportionate next to your main furniture pieces.

For smaller spaces, a compact pouffe is a great option. It can tuck neatly into a corner, slide beside an armchair, or move out of the way when you want more floor space. In larger rooms, you might prefer a bigger footstool that feels more substantial and adds visual balance to the layout.

You can also consider whether you’d like one pouffe or a double setup — such as two matching footstools placed opposite each other in a larger seating area. This can look polished and symmetrical, while offering extra surface space and flexibility for guests.

What materials, texture and colour do you prefer?

Pouffes aren’t just practical. They’re also a chance to introduce texture and style into your home. The material you choose can completely change how your space feels, from cosy and soft to sleek and refined.

If you want something warm and inviting, upholstered pouffes are a perfect choice. A cushioned finish adds softness to your room and can make the overall design feel more relaxed. Velvet pouffes are especially popular for their rich texture and comfortable feel.

Colour plays a huge role too. Neutral tones can blend in effortlessly with existing décor, while a bold shade can become an accent piece that lifts the entire room. You could choose a colour that matches your cushions, rug, or wall art — or you can pick something contrasting to make the pouffe stand out more.

Some pouffes also feature subtle patterns, which can add character without overpowering the space. If you prefer a calm, minimal interior, go for simple designs. If you like a more playful home, patterns and colour are a fun way to add personality.

Pouffes are a smart multi-use pieces

The best thing about pouffes is how many ways you can use them. While most people buy them as footstools, they quickly become the kind of furniture you rely on every day.

Need extra seating when friends drop by? A pouffe is an easy solution — just pull it closer to the seating area and you’ve created another place to sit. Want a spot to rest your legs while reading? A cushioned pouffe will provide the support you need.

You can also use a pouffe as a practical helper in everyday life: a soft place to pause while putting on shoes in the hallway, a casual seat in the bedroom, or a flexible piece you can move around depending on what the day calls for.

Whatever your routine looks like, a pouffe is a simple way to add comfort, add style, and make your home feel more welcoming — without needing to rearrange the entire room.
