Particularly, artificially constructed ponds do not run naturally, because of their smooth sidewalls. All accrued sediment and contamination (such as leaves, feed remains and pollen) sinks to the bottom quickly and forms a layer of sludge.

Microorganisms using oxygen normally break this sediment down.
